Cardiometabolic health

Cardiometabolic health is the crisis of the modern age. It's characterised by rising rates of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), diabetes, obesity, and related metabolic disorders. These are driven by the complex interplay between lifestyle, societal, environmental and genetic factors. Nutrition and lifestyle have been identified as the key modifiable factors to lower your cardiovascular risk, as well as smoking, exposure to environmental toxins and pesticides, poor sleep, chronic stress, certain medications, obesity and nutrient deficiencies. This makes it a very compelling area to specialise in.

In terms of nutrition, the industrialisation of food systems has driven the widespread consumption of processed and ultra processed foods:

- diets rich in refined sugars and high fructose corn syrups, trans fats, emulsifiers contribute to obesity, insulin resistance, high cholesterol and inflammation.

-Low intake of fruits, vegetables and wholegrains, rich in nutrients and fibre, which are protective against metabolic and cardiovascular diseases.

Once any of the Cardiometabolic health markers are out of balance (elevated), inflammatory and metabolic changes trigger a cascade in the body, increasing the risk of atherosclerosis, blood clots, strokes and heart attacks.

Some common signs of cardiometabolic dysfunction are:

  • Fatigue and low mood

  • Persistent inflammation or lowered immunity

  • Weight gain

  • Hypoglycaemic episodes (low blood sugar)

  • Digestive discomfort

  • Post-viral fatigue

  • Cravings and disrupted appetite

  • Increased thirst and urination

  • Sleep disturbances

Proactively addressing cardiometabolic issues will improve how you feel on a day-to-day basis and promote healthy ageing.
